The losing streak stands at five as the Gorillas fell to Southwest Baptist University in a blowout with the final score being 76-57 last night in John Lance Arena.
The first half looked to be a blowout in favor of the Bearcats, as they jumped out to a quick 17-point lead to begin the half. But, because of turnovers and sloppy play, the Gorillas were able to rely heavily on DePrice Taylor, who helped cut the lead to nine points with the Bearcats leading 31-22 going into the half. Taylor's ankle, which had been injured last weekend, didn't seem to be bothering her as she led the team with seven points in the first half. Courtney Heady of Southwest Baptist led the game with 12 points at the end of the first half, followed by Rachel Graves and Jasmine Sanford with six points each.
The second half proved to be tough for the Gorillas to handle as the Bearcats' shots from behind the arch continued to fall; Graves shot 6-7 from the three-point range to finish with 24 points, followed by Heady who finished the game with 24.
The Gorillas played strong down the stretch, but not strong enough. Taylor finished the game with 15 points, followed by Bailey Waugh, whose three-point shooting contributed 12 points.
The Pitt State women's basketball team dropped a tough road decision in an MIAA match-up against the Jennies of Central Missouri in a hard-fought 75-62 decision last Saturday.
"We know we are better than what our record shows," senior guard Maya Onikute said. "But we just need to show how good we are every time we step on an opponent's home court."
Onikute was one of the stars of the game for Pitt State as she dropped 13 points, 11 of which came in a close-fought first half. The Gorillas were led in scoring by senior Taylor, who played sensationally, scorching the net for 18 points, until she was forced to leave midway through the second half with an ankle injury.
However, injuries weren't the only problem that plagued the Gorillas as senior Nicole McCombs was charged with a flagrant foul and was ejected after she was just starting to heat up for seven points in the second half.
To add to the Gorillas' problems, the Jennies showed up big time statistically. Rebecca Roberts led all scorers with 19 points, but the 3-point shooting of Taylor Hanson proved to be troublesome for the Gorillas. Hanson was 5-10 from behind the arch, accounting for 15 of the Jennies points. Kara Fleming and Meghan Waggoner added 10 points each.
The last minutes of the second half proved to be the biggest struggle of the game. The Gorillas pulled within three points, only to watch the Jennies go on a 14-4 scoring run to end the game.
The women's basketball team will take on Northwest Missouri State at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at John Lance Arena.
