The Gorilla indoor track and field team traveled to MSSU over the weekend for the Fazoli's/Baymont Inn Invitational. Junior Kiara Jones set the new mark for future Gorillas in the indoor triple jump with a mark of 50 feet, 3.5 inches, smashing the former 19-year record held by Darryl Morgan of 49 feet, 5.75 inches. With that, Jones jumped himself into the nationals after finishing second to Emporia State's Josh Honeycutt.
Sophomore Heidi Smith also punched her own ticket into nationals with a shot put throw of 46 feet, 11 inches, grabbing hold of the second place trophy in the event. Senior Brian Allen brought home the first place men's title in shot put with a throw of 57 feet, 6.25 inches. Fellow senior Jeremy Jackson hurdled himself into a first place finish, posting a time of 7.61 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Junior Michelle Mitchell improved on her provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, 11.75 inches, taking second place in the event.
Senior Tim Testa took first place in the 3,000-meter run, posting a time of 8 minutes, 43 seconds; Testa also took third place in the mile-run 24 hours after running the 3,000-meter run with a time of 4:17.
His time caught the coach's attention.
"I was very proud of the way Tim ran this weekend," head coach Russ Jewett said.
Junior Rosalyn Nelson ran her way into the record books and a first place finish in the women's 60-meter dash, posting a time of 7.61 seconds.
The Gorilla indoor track and field team will split up this weekend with half of the team traveling to Lincoln, Neb., to compete with the Huskers and other competitors, with the other half of the team traveling to Central Missouri. The Gorilla indoor track and field squad has its home meet at noon Friday, Feb. 12, at John Lance Arena at noon.
