If winning is contagious, then someone better quarantine the PSU volleyball team. The Gorillas (21-9, 11-5 MIAA) swept through Northwest Missouri and Truman last Friday and Saturday in their final home games of the season.
"Skill execution was very high for both matches. All around, our energy and intensity was very high in both matches," coach Ibraheem Suberu said.
Pitt started strong on Friday, taking Northwest in three straight sets to give PSU its fourth-straight 20-win season. The Gorillas took the first set 25-13 to set the tone for the match, as well as the weekend.
"We started really strong. We're trying to do everything to play strong and keep it going for the rest of the year," senior Pamela Cartagena said.
Northwest recovered after the first set to make the second and third sets closer, but PSU was able to fend off the Bearcats 25-19 and 25-20.
Two Gorillas finished the match with double-digit kills, led by sophomore Corrinne Stringer with 13, followed by Cartagena with 12. Junior transfer Molly Bergkamp finished with nine kills, while hitting at an impressive .533 for the match.
PSU got great production from the service line as they recorded 10 service aces for the match. Cartagena contributed with four aces and sophomore Samantha Franiuk chipped in with three aces of her own.
"Franiuk has been steady in her serving game for us and that has been a big plus," Suberu said. "She's definitely one person whose energy has been a boost for this team."
Senior Emily Vosseler recorded a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs.
Cartagena led the team in digs with 15, followed by junior Cassie Wilson with 11.
Halloween night also marked senior night for the Gorillas, as Cartagena and Vosseler bid farewell to John Lance arena in style with a 3-0 victory over No. 18 Truman. PSU won 25-18, 25-22 and 25-18 to send off the seniors in style.
"It was very exciting because we played really good and really hard, we knew we had to win that game," Cartagena said.
