The Military Science Department at PSU was well represented recently at the 2009 ROTC Ranger Challenge, held Saturday, Oct. 24, at Camp Dodge in Iowa.
Eighteen teams from 12 universities competed in this year's annual competition. The events began at 5 a.m. with the assembly of every team on the field at Camp Dodge.
Capt. Josh Shay, assistant professor of military science and ranger challenge team manager, said many of the universities present were from the Midwest.
"A majority of the schools we competed against were Division I schools," Shay said. "Some of the schools competing in the Challenge included KU, K-State, Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska and many more. We featured two separate teams at the competition, as did a few other universities."
The competition consisted of eight events, involving individual and team efforts. The events included a physical fitness test, a rope bridge, weapon assembly/disassembly, a field leadership reaction course, a marksmanship competition, land navigation, a grenade assault course and a 10K road march. Pitt State shined during the physical fitness test as David Hansen, senior in military science, ran the second-fastest time out of all 162 competitors.
PSU continued its impressive start into the second event with PSU's Team One taking first place in the rope bridge event and earning a streamer for their efforts. Their hot streak would continue into the third and fourth events as well, as Team One took second place in the rifle assembly and disassembly challenge and marksmanship competition. In the marksmanship competition, Aaron Glowacki, freshman in military science, was recognized as the top shooter out of all of the featured competitors.
The Gorilla Battalion rode its strong start into the field leadership course, earning another first place finish and streamer. Their efforts could not hold up during the land navigation course though, as Team One finished in sixth place.
With two first place finishes under their belt, PSU Team One earned their third streamer of the day by taking another first place finish in the grenade assault course. After completing seven of the eight events, the 10K march was all that stood between PSU and an overall first place finish.
