PSU's Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation will play host this week to the 2009 Kansas Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (KAPHERD) convention, Wednesday-Friday, Oct. 28-30.
KAPHERD is a statewide organization consisting of recreation faculty and students from institutions all over Kansas. A convention is held every year for members of KAPHERD to attend. The Student Recreation Center will be the main site for this year's convention.
Scott Gorman, professor in the HHPR department and KAPHERD convention manager, said there are a variety of workshops the convention offers for its attendees.
"We offer 66 individual wellness, dance and recreation programs along with pre-and post-convention workshops," Gorman said. "The convention is a big-time opportunity to gain professional recreation knowledge through experience. Students also gain an opportunity to physically participate in a professional setting."
All four gyms and several classrooms will be in use at the recreation center for the convention. An exhibit area will also be set up for organizations showing exhibits.
Gorman expects a large number of people to attend the convention.
"We're expecting about 500 people from across Kansas," he said. "We will also feature speakers from Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota, along with others across the district."
The KAPHERD convention is held at a new location every year. Different areas have to bid to receive the opportunity to host the convention.
Gorman said being chosen had everything to do with the new Student Recreation Center.
"We had to bid to host the convention, and received it after we built our new recreation center," Gorman said. "The KAPHERD convention gives us the opportunity to showcase our new facility, as well as the faculty and students that make up the Health, Human Performance and Recreation department."
Janice Jewett, a HHPR professor and KAPHERD convention manager, also said this will be a good opportunity to show off the recreation center.
