The PSU Chamber Orchestra will perform "An Autumn Concert," conducted by Selim Giray, associate professor in the Music Department, this Thursday. Giray has conducted the orchestra for seven years.
The concert will feature music by Mozart, Josef Suk, a Czech composer, and Vivaldi.
The piece the orchestra will play by Suk, "Serenade for Strings in E-flat Major," is not one of the most popular, says Giray.
However, he chose it for a variety reasons.
"I believe that the piece deserves our attention, and I feel our orchestra is very strong and can meet and exceed the challenges that this particular piece requires," said Giray.
The piece by Vivaldi, "Concerto in B Minor for Four Violins," will feature four soloists: Erika Zelada, Aysegül Giray, José Miranda and Ramiro Miranda.
The two pieces by Mozart will be performed by the PSU Chorale, which is directed by Susan Marchant.
At this concert, the orchestra will be comprised of 21 performers. However, the orchestra normally has 19, says Giray.
Of the 19, all are PSU students except for one, a Pittsburg resident.
Being a member of the orchestra provides PSU students with opportunities, Giray says.
"For instance, this year we were invited to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop in February in Wichita," said Giray. "To my knowledge, this is the first time that we are performing there, so that is one opportunity aside from getting to perform, to make music, to get experience, and to be exposed to repertoire. It is useful as professionals to be exposed to the repertoire that we are playing."
The orchestra performs one concert per semester, as well as the Timmons Chapel concert as a whole or as a smaller ensemble, says Giray.
