Pittsburg State University broadcasting students received nine first-place awards at the Kansas Association Broadcasters conference in April.
Aaron Thompson, senior in communication, won two first-place awards in the undergraduate category: Enterprise news package "Malcolm Jamal Warner Visits Pittsburg State" and complete sports feature "2008 Springball Package."
Thompson said he is proud of the department but was surprised to receive the awards.
"We're always kind of a big program in the state and a lot of people don't realize that we are just as good as KU and K-State," Thompson said.
Overall, the group won 17 awards and several students took home individual awards in first, second and honorable mention.
First place winners are Zoel Lopez, Howard Lohr, Brock Lohr, Kristen Livingston, Pam Peters, Kaylan Baker, Eric Stripling, Aaron Thompson, Anthony Monteleone, Tyler Swezey, Liz Harris, Brandon Buck, Tyler Meyer, Justin Cartwright, Aaron Loehr and Aaron Oestreicher.
Zoel Lopez, senior in communication with an emphasis in broadcasting, won first place for radio production "Z is for Zoel Radio" and his "JT's Spec Ad" 30 second commercial.
"I think overall our program is right up there with KU and K-State," Lopez said. "They have the name recognition with their successful sports program, and competing with that is tough but I think overall we are neck and neck with those schools in our department."
Second place winners are Kaylan Baker, Jordan Beggs, Brian Caulkins, Liz Harris, Tyler Swezey, Zoel Lopez, Howard Lohr, Brock Lohr, Eric Stripling, Aaron Thompson, Aaron Loehr, Doug Magill, Andrew Reeves, Jonna Fearmonti, Christina Brown and Dallas Cross.
Honorable Mentions were awarded to Zach Howard, Brianna Buchanan, Andrew Reeves, Eric Stripling, Zoel Lopez, Dallas Cross, Tyler Swezey, Liz Harris, Doug Magill, Tyler Myer, Jonna Fearmonti, Christina Brown, Leslie Haynes and Aaron Loehr.
