The Student Government Association had its final meeting of the year Wednesday night in the Governors Room in the Overman Student Center, where the new SGA administration was sworn into office.
Andrea Cole became the new president and Samantha Heady became vice president.
Heady ran the meeting and the first order of business was to swear in the new senators and cabinet members. Edwin Stremel became the new campus affairs director, Bryan McCoy became the new academic affairs director; Ross Turney the community affairs director; and Eric Jones the treasurer.
The Senate voted on a new legislative affairs director, the only cabinet position that is not chosen by the new administration, since the legislative affairs director has voting power. Thomas Gregory and Jason Bilberry, both previous members of SGA, were nominated for the position.
Sen. Kierstin Houk defended Bilberry and said he is a qualified candidate.
"Jason has worked hard all year, and no matter what his political affiliation, I feel that he would do an amazing job at this position," Houk said, referencing Bilberry's position as vice president of Campus Republicans. "He is really dedicated to SGA and really dedicated to politics. He has spoken at several different events and really wants to get involved. He is not involved in a fraternity, so he doesn't have a feel for how to get involved with other organizations."
Academic affairs director McCoy spoke on Gregory's leadership abilities and says that he is the person for the job.
"I'm not sure how being in a fraternity would make you more qualified for this, but Tom is a great young man and he is from this area," McCoy said. "He has the experience from being up in Topeka and from his father being a senator and things like that. He had the opportunity to apply for another cabinet position, but he turned that down so he can come here and do legislative affairs."
The Senate voted Gregory in as legislative affairs director.
Ed Wirthwein and Steve Erwin were voted in as advisers for next year.
