The Pitt State golf team finished its season this weekend with the MIAA Championships in Branson on April 20 and April 21.
Keith Capps led the team with a score of 231, a tie for 14th place. Shane Collins finished in 39th place; Tyler Casey in 40th; Kyle Capps in 41st; and Eric Gorenc in 42nd.
The Pitt State golfers took last in the tournament, which eliminated them from qualifying for regionals and ended their season.
"I know as a team our main goal was to qualify for regionals, and we fell short of that goal this weekend," said sophomore Kyle Capps.
Pitt State finished eighth in the conference with 12.5 total points for the season. Washburn took the first-place title, with a total of 48 points.
"I was hoping to get into regionals, and as a team we didn't do too well," said junior Shane Collins. "We have a lot of good talent, and I think next year we can play well."
Throughout the season, the team had to battle through poor weather conditions.
"We played through some tough conditions in the spring," said Capps. "Until this last weekend, it was never above 55 degrees and not raining, snowing or real windy. We have not had exactly ideal conditions for golf this season, but we played pretty well through it."
The team consisted of nine athletes this year, with seven sophomores, one junior and one freshman, all of whom are planning to return next year.
"I'm proud of the team for sticking together and playing in some good tournaments," said Collins. "We had some tournaments that we can build on for next year."
Collins will lead the team as the only returning senior next fall.
"Next year we have all the guys coming back, so I think we are capable of finishing in the top half of the conference and qualifying for regionals," said Capps.
"I think we can be the force to be reckoned with in the conference next year," said Collins.
